The movement of motor technology away from corded electrification and toward small battery-powered motors continues to gain momentum in the market. Initially, the move to battery-powered electric motor control centered around brushed DC (BDC) motor technology, and while it continues to be widely used, applications requiring increased efficiency and durability from low-power/high-torque electric motor systems have been transitioning to brushless DC (BLDC) technology.
Further, the accelerating trend of electrification of the powertrain is driving tremendous growth in design and use of electric motors. A servo drive is used to power electric servomechanisms by receiving a command signal from a control system, amplifying it, and transmitting the electric current to a servo motor. It allows producing motion that is proportional to the command signal. A servo drive monitors the mechanism's feedback signal. It also continually adjusts in case of deviation from the expected behavior. With this feedback, the commanded motion's accuracy can be ensured, and unwanted motion can be detected. A unique characteristic of the servo motor is that it consumes power while rotating to the desired position and then rests upon arrival.

Whatever you touch in a car, there is an electric motor close by. Brushed DC motors are easy to control and often serve as actuators with an overall short operating time. Torque control down to zero speed is easy to achieve.
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have less wear but need a complex control algorithm and, therefore, higher computing power than a DC motor drive. BLDC motors are most suitable for applications demanding long-term continuous duty like fuel pumps.
48 V battery systems offer significant current reduction and weight reduction for the wiring harness resulting in lower fuel consumption. While the selection of 48 V micro-hybrid components is currently limited, Infineon provides cost-effective and high-performance electrification solutions for applications in both entry-level and upper market segments.
