Power charging and data connectivity for automotive USB-C solutions
Elevate your designs with efficient and reliable automotive USB hub solutions from Infineon. Our Standard Power Range (SPR) and Extended Power Range (EPR) solutions for in-cabin USB-C charging provide higher charging speeds and data transfer rates. EZ-PD™ CCG7xxx USB PD controllers and EZ-USB™ HX3 USB hub controllers combined with firmware can implement dynamic load sharing, output power throttling and moisture detection. The entire solution is completed with the latest MOSFET OptiMOS™ family and LIN transceivers which simplify the design process and speed up time-to-market by AEC-Q100 qualification and wide range of compact packages.
The USB promoter group introduced the SPR and EPR standards, enabling USB devices to deliver up to 100 W of power. Mobile devices such as phones, tablets, gaming consoles, and PCs are now increasing their charging capabilities to around 100 W. Automotive OEMs can now meet these high-power charging demands with USB hub and Power Delivery (PD) controllers from Infineon for all three types of applications:
• Head-unit (HU) applications or breakout boxes
• Rear-seat charger (RSC) applications
• Rear-seat entertainment (RSE) applications
Three application use cases for automotive USB Type-C charging ports
Automotive USB Type-C charging can be grouped into three application use cases.
Head units (or breakout boxes): These are USB Type-C power modules connect to head units for USB data transfer, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, mass storage devices, etc., while providing higher power (up to 100 W) to the connected USB devices.
Rear-seat chargers (with no USB data): These are standalone power delivery (PD) modules with USB Type-C connectors that will provide power only (a maximum of 100 W); there will be no USB data communication involved. These modules may optionally carry LIN bus connectivity.
Rear-seat entertainment systems (with display port video over USB Type-C connectors): These are USB Type-C PD modules will be found in the rear seats of automobiles, connected to a video display monitor(s). These modules will stream video content from phones, tablets, notebooks, and game consoles over the USB Type-C connector, simultaneously providing higher power (up to 100 W) to charge the connected USB devices. These modules may optionally carry LIN bus connectivity.
Future-proof your design: Scalable USB-C power and data solution
Infineon's EZ-PD™ automotive charging solution supports the ever-changing specifications for USB Type-C chargers. A scalable solution makes it possible to create core designs that are flexible and cost-effective while cutting down on development expenses and time to market. Check out the characteristics of our chipset solutions below.
Scalability: The chipset solution supports single and dual PD port designs for output power up to 100 W with external MOSFETs.
High integration: USB-PD controllers EZ-PD™ CCG7D and CCG7S with embedded CPU, flash, LDO, LIN interface, and DC-DC buck-boost controller allow for compact designs. Our EZ-PD™ CCG7SAF single PD port controller takes integration to the next level, integrating 2 x MOSFETs for a more compact design and reduced BOM cost.
Configurability: Infineon's integrated flash enables proprietary charging solutions over USB PD with validated firmware updates.
