Energy transition requires digitalization of power distribution
Decarbonization – the change towards renewable energy resources requires digitalization of the power distribution system. Increasing power demand in combination with volatile, renewable energy sources requires advanced grid management in order to secure stable grid operation.
The change to renewable energy resources requires a disruptive change in energy distribution systems: power distribution meets digitalization
Compared to conventional power supplies, renewable sources are less constant and predictable thus require smart grid management down to the single sub-branches. Increased xEV (battery electric and hybrid electric vehicle) penetration rate causes strong increase of electrical (peak) power demand. Industrial and public setups will transition to a microgrid structure with distributed energy resources (DER) combining grid supply, photovoltaics (PV), battery storage, local generators, etc.
Energy efficiency is key to enable autonomy from fossil energies. The optimum way to address the upcoming challenges is to introduce smart power management by introducing intelligent protection devices.
