What are typical automotive BLDC motor applications?
Typical BLDC motor applications for automotive include powertrain, chassis, safety, and ADAS systems such as electric power steering, brake booster, MHEV starter generator, active roll control, HVAC compressor, transfer case, pumps, and fans. In general, we see a strong growth of BLDC motor applications within the car as more and more premium functions in cars in the past become standard in cars today.
Additionally, as cars become more autonomous and connected, safety plays an increasingly crucial role within a car. MOTIX™ TLE9180D 3-phase driver ICs provide an advanced safety feature set for high-current motor drives up to 48 V and include three integrated current sense amplifiers (CSA) for accurate current measurement.
MOTIX™ TLE9185 for 12 V applications is ISO-ready and incorporates an innovative adaptive MOSFET gate control concept and other advanced monitoring and diagnostic features.
MOTIX™ TLE9140EQW is an ISO 26262-compliant (ASIL B) device for 24 V/48 V applications without an integrated CSA, but with divers internal monitoring & diagnostic features in a tiny TSDSO-32 package.
MOTIX™ motor system ICs (SBC), another innovative family for BLDC motor control, combine a 3-phase driver with a power supply and communication interface such as CAN FD or LIN.

What is the adaptive MOSFET control feature?
Many MOTIX™ motor control ICs use a patented concept of adaptive MOSFET gate drive. This multi-stage slew rate control enables EMC tuning via SPI, including adjusting slew rate with independence from dead-time and turn on/off delays. The on-board measurement and self-adaption of external MOSFET switching times allow balancing of power dissipation vs. EMC performance, adjust for MOSFET lot-to-lot variations and reduce the need for end-of-line calibration effort.
Adaptive MOSFET control is an integrated feature of the following MOTIX™ gate driver ICs for BLDC motors: TLE9140 and TLE9185 and upcoming products.
Upcoming Products
We continue to develop our well established MOTIX™ portfolio for BLDC motor control
MOTIX™ TLE9189x products are developed according to the ISO 26262 ASIL D development flow and are addressing the needs of safety relevant application such as EPS and braking. The product family uses a conventional motor control concept via PWM input control and three integrated current sense amplifiers for current ground measurement with a precise configurable reference voltage (3.3/5V). This device will be grade 0 qualified and offered in both a TQFP-48 and in a smaller VQFN-48 package, which allows for a flexible design. Targeted release is in Q3, 2024.

MOTIX™ offers a broad range of solutions for 12 V applications depending on the safety requirements and the overall system requirements. Our TLE9185 product family are ISO-ready devices including an integrated current sense amplifier (CSA) in a smaller VQFN-48 package. With the TLE9180D-21QK & 32QK we have also ISO-ready devices with 2 or 3 integrated CSA in a larger LQFP-64 package. The TLE9183QK derivative is our 12 V ASIL D compliant device suited for safety relevant applications such as EPS and braking.An additional ASIL D device we offer is the new MOTIX™ TLE9188x which has an innovative digital motor control concept, that uses an integrated digital timer unit for PWM generation and three 12-bit ADCs for accurate current shunt measurement.
For 24 V and 48 V applications, MOTIX™ offers the TLE9140EQW as an ASIL B compliant device without an integrated CSA, but with divers internal monitoring & diagnostic features in a tiny TSDSO-32 package. The TLE9180D-32QK on the other hand is compliant to ASIL C requirements and has 3 integrated CSAs in a LQFP-64 package, which makes it suitable in particular for safety related applications such as EPS and braking.
